The MAN MArine Platform
MAN builds its marine engines on three proven base platforms — the D2676 in-line six, the D2868 V8, and the D2862 V12 — engineered for high power density, a broad torque plateau, and exceptional smoothness. Every current engine runs a common-rail injection system with electronic control (EDC), four valves per cylinder, and seawater-cooled heat exchangers, and the entire range is approved for renewable diesel fuel (HVO100) with no loss of performance or change to service intervals.
The same base engines serve both recreational and commercial duty. Three of the four families shown here — the i6 (D2676), V8 (D2868), and V12 (D2862) — are the very same platforms MAN offers for commercial workboats, simply rated to heavier duty classes. This reference shows the recreational (“Marine Pleasure”) ratings in full, and for each shared platform it also lists the commercial medium- and heavy-duty ranges. It deliberately stops short of the larger commercial-only ship engines (e.g. the 29.6 L D3872, dual-fuel, and inland-waterway gensets), and excludes all hybrid variants.
A wide, usable torque plateau.
Across every family, MAN holds maximum torque flat over a broad speed band (typically ~1,200–2,100 rpm). That means strong, continuous acceleration, an efficient planing phase, and the lowest specific fuel consumption right where the boat actually operates — not just at peak rpm.
Recreational Duty Profile
MAN’s recreational ratings are certified to the light-duty operating class. Exceeding these limits moves an application into a heavier-duty (commercial) rating.

Worldwide emission certification: EPA Tier 3 (recreational), IMO Tier II, China Marine Recreational Stage II, and RCD 2013/53/EC. Optional SCR aftertreatment raises selected engines to IMO Tier III / EPA Tier 4. Typical applications: luxury yachts, displacement and planing-hull pleasure craft, and sport-fishing boats.
Commercial duty. Same engine, heavier ratings
In commercial service the i6, V8, and V12 platforms run three operating classes. The recreational rating is the light-duty class; as duty increases (more hours, higher load), MAN de-rates output to protect engine life. Per-family commercial ranges appear in each section below.
In-line six-cylinder
Man i6
The latest-generation MAN in-line six for planing and displacement hulls up to ~55 ft and sport-fishing boats. Built on the field-proven D2676 with common-rail up to 1,800 bar, it pairs the lowest weight in the range (1,251 kg dry) with the signature MAN torque plateau — and it carries a Red Dot Design Award for its engine cover.
The recreational i6 is built on the same MAN D2676 platform used in commercial workboats, just carrying heavier duty ratings — in commercial service, it runs across all three duty classes. As light-duty (recreational), it delivers 537–625 kW (730–850 hp) for up to 1,000 hours/year; as medium-duty, 412–478 kW (560–650 hp) for up to 3,000 hours/year in ferries, passenger, and fishing boats; and as heavy-duty, 147–382 kW (200–520 hp) with unlimited annual hours in tugs, trawlers, and workboats.

Man v8
Compact 16-litre V8 power. The V8-1300 is the most powerful 16-litre V8 on the market at 1,300 hp (956 kW) — roughly 59 kW per litre — letting designers specify big power without the space and weight of a larger, higher-cylinder engine. Two-stage turbocharging on the upper ratings delivers a flat torque plateau from ~1,200 rpm.
The recreational V8 is built on the MAN D2868 platform, also offered for commercial workboats across all three duty classes, carrying the same block with heavier duty ratings. As light-duty (recreational), it delivers 735–956 kW (1,000–1,300 hp) for up to 1,000 hours/year; as medium-duty, 588–662 kW (800–900 hp) for up to 3,000 hours/year in ferries, passenger, and fishing boats; and as heavy-duty, 441–500 kW (600–680 hp) with unlimited annual hours in tugs, trawlers, and workboats.

MAN v12
The 24-litre V12 spans the heart of the yacht-propulsion range, from 1,400 hp up to a full 2,000 hp on a single block. A common architecture across the ratings keeps installation dimensions consistent while output climbs, and every variant holds peak torque flat from ~1,200 rpm for strong hole-shot and efficient cruising.
The recreational V12 is built on the MAN D2862 platform, also offered for commercial workboats across all three duty classes, carrying the same block with heavier duty ratings. As light-duty (recreational), it delivers 1,029–1,471 kW (1,400–2,000 hp) for up to 1,000 hours/year; as medium-duty, 749–1,066 kW (1,019–1,450 hp) for up to 3,000 hours/year in ferries, passenger, and fishing boats; and as heavy-duty, 551–735 kW (749–1,000 hp) with unlimited annual hours in tugs, trawlers, and workboats.

MAN V12X
The flagship big-bore V12. With 29.6 litres of displacement, the V12X reaches the top of the recreational range — up to 2,200 hp (1,618 kW) and 7,358 Nm of torque — for the largest, fastest planing yachts. It keeps the same flat torque plateau and common-rail refinement as the rest of the family, scaled up.
The 29.6 L V12X is a recreational flagship, with no direct commercial equivalent in this reference. Its commercial counterpart is the larger-displacement D3872 ship engine, which falls outside the scope here — the V12X’s closest sibling platform is the D3872.
